Austria introduces fast-track repatriation for immigrants

Austria, Germany, and Sweden have received more refugee applications per capita. Now governments are taking steps to ensure fast and efficient repatriation of those not entitled to international protection.
Austria’s Interior Minister, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, announced on Saturday a plan for the deportation of 50,000 asylum seekers over three years, bringing down the refugees in the country to 37,500, down from 90,000 in 2015, DW reports. Sweden announced last Tuesday, January 26, a similar program for the repatriation of 80,000 rejected applications.
The Austrian plan entails a fast track 10-day deportation procedure, financial incentives for returnees, more charter flights, and information campaigns in the country of origin.

The Minister said that Austria is and is planning to remain among the countries with the most expulsions. Deportees will be from countries that are not entitled to international protection including Georgia, Ghana, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Mongolia. To encourage return, Austria offers a €370 incentive and that will increase to €500 if the immigrant leaves without appealing the decision.
