ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY

At Funk Facial Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty procedures are one of the most common surgeries that Dr. Etai Funk performs. Dr. Funk performs nose job surgeries for many people both male and female of many different ethnicities for cosmetic and functional fixes. Special consideration must be taken when performing African-American rhinoplasty, Hispanic rhinoplasty, Middle Eastern Rhinoplasty, and Asian rhinoplasty due to the uniqueness of these noses.
Dr. Funk's strategy is always to communicate closely with his patients to understand what type of changes they want to see and feel with their nose. There are specifically unique features with ethnic noses. Some patients would like a more Caucasian nose while others prefer to maintain their nasal ethnic identity with some refinement.

This Houston patient desired ethnic rhinoplasty for a wide base and small hump. Notice her tip is more refined and nostrils are smaller.

The African-American Nose

The African-American nose may have features of a low bridge, bulbous or ill-defined tip, and a wide base. The nostrils may be round as opposed to oval or kidney bean shaped. The skin is typically very thick and may need to be thinned. The bridge may need augmentation and narrowing. The nasal tip cartilage may need to be refined. The tip may also need to be raised or supported so that it sits a little further off the face. The nostrils and base of the nose will typically need to be brought in.

The Hispanic (Latino) Nose

Hispanics can have different features to their nose depending on their origins and heritage. The Castilian nose originates in Spain and may have a prominent nasal hump with a hanging or droopy nasal tip or normal tip. The Mestizo nose is a mixture of Native American and European roots and has a more broad based appearance with a wide bridge, flat bulbous nasal tip and very thick skin. Others, such as Mexican-Americans, will have a mixture of these noses. Each nose must be addressed differently.

The Asian Nose

The Asian features of the nose can vary as well depending on the region. Most Asian noses have a flat dorsum or bridge with poor projection of the tip and weak tip support. They may require grafting to create a more pronounce tip with more projection and definition. Asian nose surgery may also require augmentation of the bridge of the nose.

The Middle Eastern Nose

The Middle Eastern nose can vary but is similar throughout most Arab countries. This is similar to the Castilian nose which makes sense as Spain used to be ruled by the Moors who were Arabs. Most often, there is a large hump or bump on the bridge and the nasal tip is droopy. The nose may be wide at the base. Skin thickness may vary. The key with Middle Eastern rhinoplasty is to create a natural nose and not make it appear operated or similar to a Northern European nose..

Notice the subtle changes in these ethnic rhinoplasty before and afters with a more defined nasal tip on frontal view, rotated tip on profile, and smaller nostril shape on base view. Features Addressed with Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Nasal Dorsum Adjustments

Some of the most common features addressed with ethnic rhinoplasty procedures include wide and flat nasal dorsums or the bridge of the nose. This can be taken in with controlled fractures of the bone and suture techniques.

This patient was most concerned about her nasal hump, underprojected tip, and crooked nose. She underwent rhinoplasty, nasal base reduction, and septoplasty to improve her breathing.

Nasal Tip Augmentation

Other common characteristics for ethnic rhinoplasty include a short or flat, under projected nasal tip. To augment the nasal tip, cartilage grafts can be used.

Nasal Base Reduction or Alar Base Reduction

Wide bases of the nose are also a feature addressed often and can be adjusted by a base reduction. This can make the nostrils smaller and bring in the width of the nose around the nostrils. This is done with small incisions in the base of the nostril and around the nostril. These scars hide well in these shadowed areas.

Mestizo Nose
Every nose is different. That's why Dr. Funk focuses on identifying and communicating with each of his patients the changes they desire to their nose, whether for aesthetic or functional reasons, to deliver natural results for every patient.

Middle Eastern Rhinoplasty

The Pakistani or Indian nose frequently has a large bony hump and may or may not have a droopy nasal tip. Care is taken not to create a slooped nose as this will appear operated and look unnatural.
