New TV Show Teaches White Women How To Be More ‘Black’

Amid the media-driven racial tensions in this country, clearly the biggest problem is that square white housewives aren’t black enough. To combat this terrible problem the Lifetime Network launched “Girlfriend Intervention” this week, which looks to help nerdy white women unlock their inner-blackness.

Coming off the abomination Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, which helped heterosexual men become way more gay, Girlfriend Intervention purports to give whitey some hip-hop flair and swagger. Starring several overweight black women I’ve never heard of and a racially unidentifiable woman with an Asian name, the show each week gives a hopelessly “white” white person an urban make-over.

The show begins with the tag line:

See that? Whites are little girls and blacks are strong women. That’s not racists or anything, is it?

Now let’s imagine if there was a show starring 3 white “girls” and one racially ambiguous woman who teach blacks how to look and act “white”. It might actually help some people turn their lives around, but would come off as condescending and seriously racist.

I’m not too sure there is much of an advantage to teaching white women how to be funkier with more of a street vibe. And actually, blacks, especially women, are going to be furious over this show. They have a huge problem anytime they think whites are co-opting their culture. Look at the sh*t storm black women unleashed after Miley Cirus “twerked” at last year’s VMAs.

To be fair, I didn’t watch Girlfriend Intervention when it premiered last Wednesday. Since I also have no intention of ever watching this show, let’s take a look at what the Internet says.

Slate describes the show as:

While Variety pans it as:

Well there you go; a quartet of African-Americans. The women whose race I couldn’t figure out is actually black. You learn something new every day.

To me, this show seems like another example of “things are only racist when white people do them.” It’s a racial hypocrisy. Even the title is racially hostile towards white women. As if being white is such a crime that it requires an intervention like those used on drug addicts.
